Does the saying of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): "When did he make a will to him, while I was supporting him against my chest, or she said, my lap? Then he called for a basin, and he had indeed slumped in my lap. I did not realize that he had died, so when did he make a will to him?" mean that the Companions believed that Ali was the وصي (legatee/successor) of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)?

This narration attributed to Umm al-Mu'minin Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, is authentic, as it was reported by Al-Bukhari and Muslim.

However, using this narration to argue that the Companions believed or knew that Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, was the Prophet's ﷺ successor (wasi) is invalid, for the following reasons:

1. It is not mentioned in the context of the discourse that those who spoke of Ali's succession to Aisha were from among the Companions. 2. The first person to claim succession for Ali was Abdullah ibn Saba' al-Yahudi, around the year 37 AH, after the Battle of the Camel. This has been mentioned by historians from both Sunni and Shia traditions. 3. It has been authentically reported from some Companions, including Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Prophet ﷺ did not appoint anyone as his successor after him. 4. If the Prophet ﷺ had appointed Ali as his successor, and then Ali had pledged allegiance to Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman, this would imply an accusation against Ali of neglecting the Prophet's ﷺ will.

In conclusion: The claim that the Companions knew that Ali was the Prophet's ﷺ successor and that they mentioned this to Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, is a false and blatant lie.
