In the Arabic language, "naqq" (نق) refers to a sound characterized by an alternation between lengthening and retraction. It is used to describe the sound of certain animals, such as the ostrich, hen, partridge, frog, and scorpion. "Naqqaq" (نقاق) refers to a frog, and "naqnqa" (نقنقة) is its croaking sound when repeated; it may also be used for the sound of a cat. "Naqq" (نق) also denotes the opposite of فضْل (virtue or excellence), and from this, the term "naqq" is used in some popular dialects to mean envy and fault-finding.
