What is the ruling on supplicating for marriage to a married woman if the supplication is conditioned upon what is best for one's religious commitment (khairiyyah lil-deen), or by using seemingly unobjectionable phrases with an inner intention to seek marriage to her, or by supplicating that she be one's wife in Paradise?

Do not make things difficult for yourself over the marriage of a woman who is now taken, for there are many other women. And what makes you know that marrying her would have been good for you? Allah Almighty says: "And perhaps you dislike a thing and it is good for you" (Al-Baqarah: 216). You have done well by trying to turn your heart away from thinking about her, for it is not permissible for you to supplicate that she be your wife as long as she is married; because that is a supplication for separation between her and her husband. Likewise, it is not permissible to supplicate that she be your wife in Paradise for the same reason, as the consideration lies in the intention and purpose.
