What is the ruling on a mother refusing to marry off her 16-year-old daughter, citing her young age, despite the father's and daughter's consent, and the suitor being a man of religion and good character? What is the ruling on the mother's insistence on refusal and her boycotting of the wedding ceremonies? Is her stance considered disobedience (nushuz)? Does the wife have the right to make decisions within the family without informing her or seeking her opinion?

If a girl asks her guardian to marry her to a suitable man, he is obliged to marry her to him; otherwise, he sins and is considered to be preventing her marriage (عاضلاً), and the ruler then marries her off. This applies to the mother, a fortiori. The mother's action in this case is not described as 'nushuz' (disobedience); because 'nushuz' is the wife's disobedience to her husband in matters required by the marriage contract. Nevertheless, the mother is commanded to obey her husband as long as he enjoins what is good. Consultation is a religious requirement, and a husband consulting his wife regarding the marriage of their daughter is recommended, based on the Prophet's (PBUH) saying: "Consult women regarding their daughters."
