Is the intent behind the Hadith: "We were commanded to make up for the fasts and were not commanded to make up for the prayers" that the menstruating woman must perform her fasting rather than compensate for it, by analogy with the meaning of "qadaa" (perform/fulfill) in the Holy Qur'an in verses such as: "And when you have completed your rites" (2:200), "And when you have completed the prayer" (4:103), "Then let them complete their rituals" (22:29), and "And when the prayer has been concluded" (62:10)?

The scholars are unanimous that a menstruating woman is not obliged to fast and it is forbidden for her to fast. She must make up the fasts she missed during her menstruation, but she is not obliged to make up the prayers. They based this on the consensus of the Ummah and the Prophetic Sunnah, including the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Is it not that when she menstruates, she neither prays nor fasts? That is the deficiency in her religion." And the saying of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): "That used to happen to us, and we were commanded to make up the fasts, but we were not commanded to make up the prayers."
