Some were of the opinion that the hadd (prescribed punishment) for zina (unlawful sexual intercourse) should be applied to him. Others believed he should be given a ta'zir (discretionary punishment) that deters him. Still others said he should be killed outright. The preponderant view among the majority of scholars is that there is no hadd for him; rather, he should be given a ta'zir that deters him, basing their argument on the statement of Ibn Abbas: "Whoever has intercourse with an animal, there is no hadd upon him."
