What is the ruling on one who has intercourse with an animal while being ignorant of the legal ruling, and is it true that the perpetrator is to be killed and the animal is to be killed, and what is the animal's sin in this, and do the jurisprudential schools of thought agree on this opinion?

Committing bestiality is a major sin. The fundamental principle is that a responsible individual should not undertake any action until they know Allah's ruling concerning it. It has been narrated from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "Whoever you find committing bestiality, kill him and kill the animal." Scholars have differed on acting upon this hadith (definition). The majority of jurists have gone to the opinion that there is no prescribed punishment (hadd) for one who commits bestiality, but he should be disciplined (ta'zeer), and the animal should not be killed. The Hanbalis and some Shafi'is have gone to the opinion that the animal should be killed along with the perpetrator, based on the marfu' hadith of Ibn Abbas.
