Usury in the two currencies (gold and silver) is forbidden by religious text, and in banknotes, it is forbidden by analogy to them due to their monetary value. Riba al-Nasi'ah (usury of delay) is forbidden in all monetary transactions, and Riba al-Fadl (usury of excess) is forbidden if the commodity is of the same type. Immediate possession is a condition for exchanging different currencies. It is not permissible to lease banknotes, because their utilization consumes their essence, and a condition of leasing is the preservation of the leased item. Any excess taken on them is explicit usury. As for leasing currency for adornment or weighing, it is permissible under conditions such as knowing the duration and the preservation of the item.
