Is it permissible to sell currency notes for more than their face value, based on the distinction of their serial number?
It is impermissible to sell currency for currency of the same type at a value higher than its face value, as this constitutes usury (riba). Current currencies share the same rulings as gold and silver concerning usury. It is stated in the Hadith: "Gold for gold, silver for silver... like for like, hand to hand. Whoever gives more or asks for more has engaged in usury; both the giver and the receiver are equal in this." Furthermore, the Islamic Fiqh Academy has ruled that paper currencies possess the same Sharia rulings as gold and silver concerning usury and zakat. In addition to this, purchasing distinctive currency serial numbers falls under forbidden extravagance.
