Does Ibn Taymiyyah differentiate between the ignorant and the forgetful regarding the repetition of prayer for one who omitted a pillar or a condition?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah holds that whoever omits a condition or a pillar of prayer due to ignorance is not required to repeat it. As for one who omits a condition due to forgetfulness, if the condition is from the category of performing what is commanded, such as ritual purity from minor impurity (hadath), then his prayer is invalid and he must repeat it. However, if the condition is from the category of refraining from what is prohibited, such as purity from filth (khabath), then he is not required to repeat it. And whoever omits a pillar due to forgetfulness, his prayer is not valid and he must perform what he forgot, either by adding it to what he has already prayed, or by repeating the entire prayer.
