Everything that afflicts a servant is by Allah's decree and is good for him. Calamities can be a path to a great status with Allah. Impatience deprives one of the reward for patience, and despair and hopelessness in Allah's mercy are among the major forbidden acts. Sadness is an ailment that weakens the heart and saps resolve, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, sought refuge from it. Knowledge and love of Allah remove sadness and bring joy. Suicide is a loss in this world and the hereafter, and masturbation is forbidden and does not bring tranquility. One is advised to be patient and content with Allah's decree, and to marry or fast to alleviate desires.
