Maintaining kinship ties is among the most virtuous deeds, and severing them is one of the major sins. The kin whose ties must be maintained are all those with whom one has a forbidden degree of kinship (mahram), such as paternal uncles and aunts. As for their children, maintaining ties with them is commendable. How kinship ties are maintained is subject to custom; it could be through financial support, visits, or other means. Visiting kin is not obligatory unless refraining from it is considered a severance of ties by custom. One should strive against the self to maintain kinship ties, and not pay heed to the deceptions of the self and Satan that discourage one from doing so.
