What is the ruling on attending a co-educational school – while uncovering the face and hands and wearing trousers – and is it permissible to engage in remembrance of Allah (dhikr) therein, and what should the daughter do if the father becomes angry, curses, and threatens to abandon prayer if she leaves it, and how can she avoid being influenced by his false ideas, and what is the Islamic ruling on that?

It is permissible for you to remember Allah Almighty; indeed, it is commendable, even if you are in a mixed-gender school and are negligent in some duties, such as the legal hijab. This is not among the forms of remembrance forbidden during sin, for what is forbidden is that which contradicts the unlawful act itself. It is obligatory for you not to leave your home except in modest clothing. If you are unable to leave the mixed-gender school, then it is obligatory for you to distance yourself from situations of temptation. What will help you with this is befriending righteous women and striving to strengthen your connection with Allah. If you are unable to observe the Sharia guidelines and fear temptation for yourself, then you must leave it, and there is no sin upon you for disagreeing with your father in this matter. If your father abandons prayer, explain to him its great importance, warn him of the consequences of neglecting it, and strive to gently and wisely guide him to the path of righteousness.
