If your work does not cover your expenses and debts, it is permissible for you to accept zakat from your wife's father or anyone else, and use it to meet your needs, pay off your debts, or purchase what assists you in your work. This is because you are poor and indebted, and the noble verse: "Indeed, zakat expenditures are only for the poor and for the needy and for those employed to collect [zakat] and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for freeing captives [or slaves] and for those in debt and for the cause of Allah and for the [stranded] traveler - an obligation [imposed] by Allah. And Allah is Knowing and Wise" [At-Tawbah: 60] supports this.
