How is the Funeral Prayer performed according to the four schools of thought, what is its virtue for the deceased, and is it considered an expiation for their sins?

The funeral prayer holds great virtue and is a means of alleviating punishment for the deceased and interceding for them, especially if the number of worshippers is large. The worshipper pronounces four takbirat (Allahu Akbar) and concludes with the taslim (definition) (salutation of peace). The madhhabs (schools of thought) differ regarding raising the hands with each takbira, and regarding the recitation of Al-Fatiha, sending blessings upon the Prophet, and supplicating for the deceased. While some consider these pillars obligatory, others deem them recommended.
