That which intoxicates in large quantities is unlawful even in small quantities. This is the view of the majority of scholars. Ibn Rushd al-Hafid clarified that the Hanbalis prohibit both small and large quantities of intoxicating nabidh (fermented drinks), unlike the Iraqis. Muhammad ibn al-Hasan al-Shaybani, who is from the Hanafis, held the view that what intoxicates in large quantities is unlawful even in small quantities, and this is the relied-upon opinion in their madhhab. Therefore, drinks that intoxicate in large quantities are not permissible to consume even in small amounts, even if those small amounts do not cause intoxication.
