Is a wife obligated to apologize to her husband's sister, who mistreats her and her family, in order to appease her husband who makes this a condition for his return, despite the wife's feeling of oppression and her refusal to do so?
The phenomenon of discord between a wife and her husband's family is bad and widespread. The husband must be just and fair by seeking the truth. He should advise his wife if she is wrong, or compel his sisters to desist from harming his wife if they are oppressive, based on the saying of Allah Almighty in the Hadith Qudsi: "O My servants, I have forbidden injustice for Myself and made it unlawful among you, so do not commit injustice against one another."
The wife must be patient and kind to her husband's family, and comply with her husband's request to preserve her family and son, and to apply the words of Allah Almighty: "Repel evil with that which is better, and thereupon he between whom and you was enmity [will become] as though he was a devoted friend. But none is granted it except those who are patient, and none is granted it except one having a great portion [of good]." And according to the Hadith: "If you are as you say, then it is as if you are feeding them hot ashes, and you will continue to have a supporter from Allah against them as long as you remain in that state."
