Is it permissible to give Zakat al-Mal to a student of knowledge who is studying medicine or medical sciences as a scholarship?
Allah Almighty has clarified the categories for distribution in the Quran, limiting them to eight categories mentioned in verse 60 of Surat At-. Support for medical science and similar fields is not among them, unless the student pursuing such a field is poor, in which case it is permissible to give him zakat due to his poverty. The majority of scholars have interpreted the category "fi sabilillah" (in the way of Allah) as referring to those engaged in military expeditions and guarding frontiers, and by extension, students of Islamic sacred knowledge. Therefore, it is not permissible to disburse zakat to support medicine and similar fields. However, they can be supported through voluntary charity.
