If the legal marriage contract (aqd) is concluded between a man and a woman, she becomes his wife, and it becomes permissible for him to do with her what is permissible for a man with his wife. However, it is preferable to follow custom by delaying consummation (dukhul) until after the contract to avoid embarrassment. The woman has the right to request an expedited consummation, and it is better for the man to do so if there is no impediment, due to the great good it contains, such as fortifying the spouses (ihsan).
