Is it acceptable for a servant to perform a supererogatory act while feeling burdened and compelled, after having felt the sweetness of faith, or is it impermissible to compel oneself to act?

The human soul experiences periods of zeal and decline. It is natural to encounter times of spiritual languor and idleness in acts of worship. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, mentioned, "For every deed there is a period of intense activity, and for every period of intense activity there is a period of slackening. So, whoever's period of slackening is in accordance with my Sunnah, he has succeeded. And whoever's period of slackening is otherwise, he has perished."

Therefore, a Muslim should deal gently with their soul during periods of spiritual languor, and strive to perform recommended acts, even if they are few, so as not to abandon them entirely. This is because discontinuing acts of worship one has become accustomed to is disliked, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Abdullah ibn Amr, "O Abdullah, do not be like so-and-lan who used to pray at night but then abandoned night prayer." What is required is perseverance in good deeds, even if they are few.
