Is the divorce of a woman in her postpartum period (nifas) considered a minor irrevocable divorce or a major irrevocable divorce if it is a triple divorce?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The majority of scholars are of the opinion that pronouncing three divorces with a single utterance effects an irrevocable divorce (al-bainunah al-kubra), and the divorce of a woman experiencing postpartum bleeding (nifas) is valid. Thus, she does not become lawful for her husband until she marries another husband willingly, consummates the marriage with him, and he then divorces her. As for Ibn Taymiyyah, he holds the view that pronouncing three divorces with a single utterance only effects a single divorce, and the divorce of a woman experiencing postpartum bleeding does not occur at all because it is an innovated divorce (talaq bid'i).
