The question

What is the ruling on saying "Sami' Allahu liman hamidah" (Allah hears the one who praises Him) and "Rabbana wa lakal-hamd" (Our Lord, to You be all praise) outside their designated places, whether by omission, addition, or error in timing, knowing that some of them are said during transition and some after completing the standing (i'tidal)?

The answer

The place for saying "Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah" (Allah hears those who praise Him) and the takbirat al-intiqal (transition takbirs) when moving from one pillar to another. The obligation of "Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah" is a matter of difference; the Hanbalis consider it obligatory, while the majority (Jumhur) consider it recommended. According to the Hanbalis, the prayer of one who intentionally recites some obligatory dhikr (remembrance) after its designated place is invalidated. However, some among them have made it easier, viewing the prayer as valid for one who completes the dhikr after transitioning, due to the difficulty of strict adherence. If one recites "Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah" after rising from rukū' (bowing) forgetfully, they must perform the sajdat al-sahw (prostration of forgetfulness) according to the Hanbalis. If they do it intentionally, their prayer is invalidated according to them, but it is valid according to the majority. The view of the majority is that the ma'mūm (follower) does not say "Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah." Rather, the Imam and the one praying alone say it while rising, and then both say "Rabbana wa laka al-hamd" (Our Lord, and to You be all praise). As for the ma'mūm, they suffice with saying "Rabbana wa laka al-hamd" while rising. Saying "Rabbana wa laka al-hamd" during the transition is the correct view, consistent with the school of the majority.
