Which is better: Hajj or helping a poor neighbor with the money for Hajj and postponing it, if Hajj is obligatory?

The majority of scholars hold that Hajj is obligatory immediately upon every able-bodied person. Ability encompasses both physical and financial capacity. If a person is able-bodied, Hajj becomes a personal obligation (aynī) upon him, and it takes precedence over giving charity to a poor neighbor whose upkeep is not his responsibility. This is because Hajj is an obligatory act (fard), whereas giving charity in this specific instance is a voluntary act (taṭawwuʿ). Hajj, performed in the prescribed manner, is superior to non-obligatory charity.
