Is it permissible to join the committee of an Islamic association at a mixed-gender university if one can avoid uncontrolled mixing and limit oneself to performing specific tasks?

The widespread mixing between genders (ikhtilat) is forbidden and a door to fitnah (temptation/strife). Therefore, it is not permissible to participate in any activity where it occurs, except out of necessity or a recognized need. It is also not permissible to remain in a mixed place except for the extent of the need, and then one should leave. If it is possible to avoid mixing in the mixed association, then there is no harm. However, if it is not possible and there is a need to join, then it should be to the extent of the need, and mixing should be avoided as much as possible. The organizers of the association should be advised of the necessity to adhere to the rulings of Sharia in order for it to be truly Islamic.
