How can the Prophet's death by poison be reconciled with the verse, "And Allah will protect you from the people"?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, took guards at the beginning of his call due to the intense enmity of the disbelievers and their numerous attempts to kill him. However, when the verse was revealed: {And Allah will protect you from the people}, he abandoned the guards. Allah protected him from being killed or captured. Yet, the harm and illnesses he endured were to elevate his ranks and for us to emulate him. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, died a natural death after conveying the message and after Allah perfected the religion. His death was neither an assassination nor sudden.
