The question

What is the nature of the blood discharged after forty days from postpartum bleeding: is it menstruation, postpartum bleeding, or irregular bleeding? And should the questioner repeat the prayers for the days she considered menstruation and then it stopped, and is there an opinion that the maximum duration of postpartum bleeding is sixty days?

The answer

This blood is considered menstruation as long as it is seen after the cessation of post-natal bleeding (nifas). The opinion of the Shafi'is, Malikis, and Ibn Uthaymeen, that the maximum period of nifas is sixty days, is a strong opinion, and there is no harm for whoever follows it. Although the fatwa adopted by us is that the maximum period of nifas is forty days, and whatever a woman sees after forty days is considered menstruation if it coincides with the duration of her regular period, otherwise it is irregular bleeding (istihadah).
