Did the Companion Ubayd Allah ibn Jahsh apostatize and die a Christian, and do the Rafidah use his story to malign the Muhajireen and Ansar, whom Allah praised in the Holy Qur’an by saying that the praise applies to some and not all?

The account of Ubaydullah ibn Jahsh's conversion to Christianity is well-known in history and biography books. However, according to the criteria of Hadith scholars, it has not been reported with an authentic chain of narration. The strongest reports available are two: The first is in Ibn Mandah's "Ma'rifat al-Sahaba," which includes the phrase "converted to Christianity," but this is contradicted by Al-Dhuhli, who is more reliable than Ibn Mandah, as his narration does not mention his conversion. The second is what Ibn Ishaq narrated from an unchained report by Urwah, which is a disconnected and unchained narration. The authenticated reports of Urwah, which were transmitted by Hadith imams, do not mention Ubaydullah's conversion to Christianity. Dr. Al-Awshan further supported the rejection of his apostasy by referencing Abu Sufyan's Hadith with Heraclius, where Abu Sufyan denied anyone apostatizing after embracing Islam.

Even if the report of his apostasy were true, it would not discredit the rest of the early Muhajirun (Emigrants) companions, whom Allah praised and promised good. The verses, such as Allah's saying: ﴿And the first forerunners [in the faith] among the Muhajireen and the Ansar and those who followed them with good conduct - Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him, and He has prepared for them Gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they will abide forever. That is the great attainment.﴾ [At-Tawbah: 100], and His saying: ﴿Not equal among you are those who spent before the conquest [of Makkah] and fought [and those who did not]. Those are greater in degree than those who spent afterwards and fought. But to all has Allah promised the best [reward]. And Allah is acquainted with what you do.﴾ [Al-Hadid: 10], encompass all early Muhajirun who fought and spent [in Allah's cause] before the conquest.
