It is difficult to avoid the inclination to promote what one trades in, even if there is something better. The ruler was forbidden from combining trade with his authority because it involves using influence and being distracted from the primary goal. Therefore, one should stay away from doubtful areas, and trade can be conducted in something unrelated to one's professional specialization. Ibn Abd al-Hakam said: "A ruler should not engage in trade, nor is it permissible for an official to trade within his authority... for whenever a ruler trades, he monopolizes and causes matters that lead to hardship." Similarly, the International Islamic Charter for Medical and Health Ethics stipulates that it is not permissible for a physician to sell medicines or medical supplies in his clinic for the purpose of trade.
