Must a daughter give her dowry to her father and pay him a monthly sum to avoid his curses upon her?

The mahr (dower) is an exclusive right of the wife; no one is permitted to take it except with her consent. This is based on the Almighty's saying: "And give the women their mahr as a free gift. But if they are pleased to give you anything from it, then consume it with pleasure and ease" (Quran 4:4), and on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "The wealth of a Muslim person is not lawful [for another] except with his willing consent."

If a father requests money from his daughter: if he is poor, then providing for his sustenance is obligatory upon her. However, if he is not in need, there is a difference of opinion regarding this matter.

A father's supplication against his child may be answered, even if it is unjust. Therefore, the daughter should appease her father to avoid his anger and supplication, for in the father's contentment lies the Lord's contentment.
