Should a drug addict whose heart Allah has opened to Islam pray, even though he has not yet rid himself of drugs, or should he wait until he quits them, knowing the sincerity of his intention?

Drugs are unanimously prohibited because they cloud the mind. Abandoning prayer is an act of disbelief according to the preponderant opinion of scholars, based on the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: “The covenant between us and them is prayer; whoever abandons it has disbelieved.” And his saying: “Between a man and disbelief and shirk is the abandonment of prayer.” It is obligatory for the drug user to avoid drugs and establish prayer. If he refuses, abandoning prayer is more grievous than drug use. Therefore, he must establish prayer and strive to rid himself of drugs. If drug use leads to intoxication, he should not approach prayer while intoxicated, as Allah Almighty says: “O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying.”
