Is it permissible to distribute the monetary value of a sheep to the poor in fulfillment of a vow to slaughter a sheep and distribute its meat to them, in the event of being unable to fulfill the vow by slaughtering the sheep?
A legitimate vow must be fulfilled in the manner in which it was vowed. It is not permissible to give the value of a sheep instead of sacrificing it, except when unable to provide it; in that case, the value suffices, for Allah the Almighty says: "Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacity" (Quran 2:286), and He says: "Allah does not charge a soul except [with that He has given] it" (Quran 65:7).
