What is the wisdom behind Lot offering his daughters to his people who were committing atrocities, and what is meant by the prohibition against looking back when they were leaving the village?

Firstly, the statement of Lot (peace be upon him): ﴿O my people, these are my daughters﴾ refers to marriage. Scholars have differed on the meaning of "my daughters," holding two views: the women of his nation, or his actual daughters.

Secondly, His saying, the Almighty: ﴿They said, “O Lot, indeed we are messengers of your Lord; they will not reach you. So set out with your family during a portion of the night and let not any among you look back, except your wife; indeed, that which strikes them will strike her. Indeed, their appointed time is the morning. Is not the morning near?”﴾ Scholars have differed on whether Lot was commanded to take his wife with him or not, holding two views: that he should not take her with him, or that she went out and looked back, so she perished.
