Is it permissible to count sins and seek forgiveness for each sin a specific number of times (a thousand times or a hundred thousand)?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

It is permissible for a Muslim to enumerate the sins he knows of, so that he may seek Allah's forgiveness for them a thousand times, or more, or less. Indeed, it has been narrated that some of the Salaf (pious predecessors) held themselves accountable for their missteps and sought Allah's forgiveness for each misstep a specific number of times. As for one whose sins have become so numerous that they are beyond counting and enumeration, let him seek Allah's forgiveness for what Allah knows, for Allah has enumerated all things.
