If the debt reaches the (the value of 85 grams of pure gold or more) and a full year (hawl) has passed, and the debtor is a wealthy person capable of repayment, then is obligatory on it at the rate of one-quarter of a tenth (2.5%) each year. It is permissible to pay the zakat on behalf of the debtor with his permission, whether before or after the debt is repaid, as long as it is not a stratagem to increase usurious interest on the debt.
