How can I atone for the sin of angering my mother, and what should I do about her frequent anger despite my attempts to avoid it?

Kindness to one's mother is one of the greatest duties and acts of devotion, and disobedience to her is one of the gravest sins. Allah Almighty commanded us to be humble and gentle with our parents, and forbade us from scolding them or speaking harshly to them, as He says: "So do not say to them, 'uff,' and do not repel them but speak to them a noble word. And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, 'My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up when I was small.'"

One must avoid angering one's mother and repent for any mistreatment that occurred. This is done through regret, resolve not to repeat it, apologizing, and striving to please her, while seeking Allah's help and frequently engaging in supplication and remembrance. Good character is acquired through habit and practice. If a person exerts effort in being kind to their parents, and their self sometimes overcomes them, it is hoped that Allah will forgive them; Allah Almighty said: "Your Lord is most knowing of what is within yourselves. If you should be righteous, then indeed He is ever Forgiving to the oft-returning [to Him]."
