Lending with a stipulated increase or collusion thereupon is forbidden (haram), and only the principal must be returned, as Allah Almighty says: "But if you repent, you may have your principal – [thus] you do not wrong, nor are you wronged." As for returning an increase without stipulation or collusion, it is permissible and commendable, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, the best among you are those who are best in paying off debts."
