What should the congregants do in the congregational prayer if the Imam makes a mistake and prays five rak'ahs for Dhuhr, and he is alerted, but he insists that he is correct?
If the Imam is certain of his own correctness, and thus completes his prayer by performing five rak'ahs, then his prayer is valid, and he should perform the prostration of forgetfulness ( as-sahw) after the salutation.
As for the follower (ma'mum) who becomes aware of the addition and the Imam does not return, it is not permissible for him to continue following. Rather, he should separate from the Imam, sit for the final , and perform the salutation. If he continues to follow while being aware, his prayer becomes invalid. However, if he continues to follow out of ignorance or forgetfulness, his prayer remains valid.
The extra rak'ah is counted for the latecomer (masbuq).
