The basic principle is that the husband is responsible for the financial support of his wife and children due to his guardianship. However, if a woman spends on her sick husband seeking the countenance of Allah, this is considered voluntary spending for which she will be rewarded, and she will have a great recompense from Allah, due to the generality of the verses and hadiths that encourage charity and spending in the way of Allah.
