The question

What should a remorseful woman do who has repented to God after committing adultery, given that her husband knows about her relationship with another man but is unaware of the adultery itself, and he insists that she go with him for ‘Umrah and swear before the Kaaba that she has not committed major sins, while she fears going lest she face the Kaaba after her transgression, and fears telling him the truth so that her home is not destroyed and her children are not scattered?

The answer

Adultery is a grave sin, and its commission by a married woman is an even greater transgression. Repentance erases what came before it. You have done well by initiating repentance. It is not the husband's right to question his wife about a past sin, nor to make her swear an oath concerning it, nor to compel her to answer. Lying is permissible for the sake of reconciliation between spouses, but false swearing is not permissible except in cases of necessity. If your husband insists on making you swear an oath and you are compelled, there is no sin upon you in swearing while using a double entendre, such as saying, "I did not commit adultery," intending to mean "after repentance."
