What is the expiation for someone who helped his female relative with money for an abortion, based on doctors' informing them that the fetus was deformed, knowing later that this is unlawful?
If the fetus's continued presence does not pose a danger to the mother's life, then it is not permissible to abort it after the ensoulment (120 days), even if it is malformed, unless a reliable medical report confirms that the continuation of the pregnancy poses a definite danger to the mother's life.
If the fetus is born alive and then dies, then whoever carried out the abortion must repent, pay full blood money (diyya), and offer expiation (). However, if it is born dead, then some scholars hold that it entails one-tenth of the mother's blood money and expiation. Assisting in an abortion in this case is forbidden (), and the helper must repent. The helper is not obligated to pay blood money or offer expiation unless they were ignorant of the ruling.
