Scholars have differed regarding the maximum duration of menstruation. The Hanbalis, Malikis, and Shafi'is hold that its maximum is fifteen days. Whereas the Hanafis believe its maximum is ten days. Those who advocate for fifteen days cite the saying of Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: "Whatever exceeds fifteen days is Istihada (non-menstrual bleeding)," and the Almighty's saying: "And they ask you about menstruation. Say, 'It is an impurity, so keep away from women during menstruation.'" (Al-Baqarah: 222). Al-Awza'i and Dawud held it to be seventeen days. Thawri, Abu Hanifa, and his two companions said: its minimum is three days and its maximum is ten, citing the hadith of Wathilah ibn al-Asqa'.
