Is zakat obligatory on money received from a monthly tontine (jam'iyyah shahriyyah), knowing that I will receive it when my turn is seventeenth?
There are two scenarios for the on association funds:
1. If the subscriber possesses wealth of the same type as the association's funds, then the amount he paid is considered a part of his wealth, and he should pay zakat on it along with his wealth whenever it becomes due. This is while taking into consideration whether he has already received the association's amount or not. If he has received it, the remaining installments are deducted as a debt. If he has not received it, the paid installments are zakatable as a debt owed by a solvent person.
2. If the subscriber does not possess wealth of the same type as the association's funds, then the hawl (one lunar year) for the zakat on the association's funds begins for him when his paid installments reach the (minimum threshold). He then pays zakat on what remains with him after deducting the outstanding installments if he has received the amount, or he pays zakat on the paid installments as a debt owed by a solvent person if he has not received it.
