The question

Is the intention I mentioned for studying the sciences of grammar and morphology, rhetoric, literature, history, principles of Qur’anic exegesis, stories of the prophets, the biography of the Companions, asceticism and heart-softeners, spiritual purification, and Islamic history, considered a righteous intention for which one is rewarded? If not, what is the righteous intention that I should have when studying these sciences in order to be rewarded for it? And does studying these sciences fall under the virtue of knowledge and its people mentioned in the verses and hadiths?

The answer

Sacred knowledge (al-ilm ash-shari) is any knowledge that serves the Sharia. This includes what is sought for its own sake, such as Tafsir (Qur'anic exegesis), Hadith (Prophetic tradition), Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), and Aqidah (creed), as well as what is sought as a means, such as auxiliary sciences like language, grammar, usul (principles), rhetoric, and others.

Shaykh Ulaish believes that sacred knowledge (ilm ash-shar) is what a person needs for themselves and their dealings, including fiqh and its principles, hadith, tafsir, and aqidah, and what these depend on, such as nahw (syntax), sarf (morphology), bayan (eloquence), and ma'an (meanings).

For a beginner in seeking knowledge, it does not harm them if they do not know the exact reason why some sciences are considered part of the Sharia sciences. It is sufficient for them to intend to draw closer to Allah by earning the reward of learning them. It is advised to stay away from obsessive thoughts that deter one from learning and not to seek knowledge alone without a guide. This is because knowledge has grades, transitions, and ranks, and one should not begin a stage of it until after completing the stage that precedes it.
