Were the marriages of the the Prophet, may God's prayers and peace be upon him, for the purpose of benefiting the call [to Islam], and for enjoying what God made lawful for him?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was a human being. His being characterized by what human nature dictates, such as the desire for marriage, does not detract from his prophethood. Rather, he was given the strength of thirty men so that he could attain what Allah has made lawful regarding women, fulfill their rights, and achieve great benefits. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, did not marry merely for the sake of sexual gratification or astounding beauty, as he sometimes preferred previously married women over virgins. His marriages served great objectives such as: increasing those who witness his inner affairs, honoring tribes, fostering greater unity, increasing religious obligations, multiplying his kinship, transmitting religious rulings, observing his character, demonstrating his perfect justice, widespread dissemination of the Sharia, comforting hearts, and establishing religious rulings like the abolition of adoption. The story of his marriage to Zaynab bint Jahsh was to abolish the custom of adoption, and not for her beauty, and reports that state otherwise are false.
