Why did the Prophet (peace be upon him) marry a number of women?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Polygyny is a divine wisdom that Allah permitted for men in previous laws and in the law of our Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, for several reasons. Among these are: that the number of women is greater than the number of men; a man may need to marry more than one wife due to his strong sexual drive; or there may be impediments with his wife that prevent him from conjugal relations with her. Furthermore, among the wisdoms behind the Prophet’s polygyny, peace and blessings be upon him, were: strengthening ties with tribes, sheltering widows, hoping for increased progeny, and multiplying female teachers. His motive was not lust, as evidenced by his marriage to previously married women and his marriage to no virgins except Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, and his chastity in his youth.
