What is the ruling on polygyny?

Allah has permitted men to have multiple wives, up to four, under two conditions: justice among the wives in terms of expenditure, clothing, and lodging (but not in love), and the ability to provide for them. Some scholars believe that polygyny is preferable for those who are able to practice it, following the example of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and due to the benefits it entails, such as protecting men and women from sin and increasing progeny.
