Did the Salaf dislike women going into the sea because it exposed their 'awrah, and what did the women of the Salaf do regarding this?
What is mentioned in the question has not been reported from Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah or other scholars. The prohibition against a woman taking off her clothes in other than her husband's house is interpreted as referring to a place where she is not safe from being seen by anyone, due to what was narrated by al-Tirmidhi and others: "No woman who takes off her clothes in other than her husband's house but that she has torn the veil between her and her Lord." Imam Malik disliked women riding the sea due to the exposure of 'awrahs involved, and scholars disliked clothes that define the 'awrah. They agreed that women should not mix with men in swimming.
