What is the definition of haram and halal?

The forbidden (haram) is that for which the doer is punished and the abstainer is rewarded, out of obedience to Allah's prohibition. The permissible (halal) incurs no sin in its performance or ترك, except if one intends thereby to strengthen oneself for obedience, in which case one is rewarded. Analysis (tahlil) and prohibition (tahrim) are the sole right of Allah. No one is permitted to deviate from Allah's straight path by following what Allah and His Messenger have legislated as halal and haram, or by making permissible what Allah has forbidden, or by forbidding what He has made permissible, or by introducing acts of worship that Allah has not legislated. Allah has condemned the polytheists who forbade what Allah did not forbid, permitted what He forbade, and legislated a religion for which Allah gave no permission.
