How many Quranic verses are abrogated in recitation, and does the Quranic challenge include the abrogated verses?

The majority of fundamentalists, jurists, hadith scholars, and exegetes have affirmed the permissibility of abrogation (naskh) of recitation (tilawah) and script (rasm) while the legal ruling remains. They substantiated this with what has been narrated from the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them). Examples of this include:

1. Abrogation of the recitation of the verse of stoning: This is confirmed by the saying of Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). 2. Abrogation of the recitation of the verse: "Do not disavow your fathers, for it is disbelief on your part to disavow your fathers." 3. Abrogation of the recitation of the verse: "Inform our people on our behalf that we have met our Lord, and He is pleased with us and has pleased us." 4. Abrogation of the recitation of a long surah, from whose verses it was mentioned: "If the son of Adam had two valleys of wealth, he would desire a third." 5. Other miscellaneous matters confirmed by a group of Companions.

It is obligatory to believe that Allah possesses ultimate wisdom in this, and our lack of knowledge of the wisdom does not negate its existence. The wisdom may lie in facilitating the memorization and preservation of the Quran, or it may be matters of worship whose wisdom Allah has exclusively kept to Himself, and to Allah belongs the highest example in that.
