Is it permissible for the husband to divorce his barren wife, or must he keep her? And would his marrying another woman be an injustice to her? And does an adopted child, whether male or female, who was breastfed by the mother, become a mahram to the parents? And is it permissible for the wife to leave her barren husband?

Divorce is permissible in Islamic law when there is a need for it, and procreation is one of the most important objectives of marriage. If the wife is unable to conceive, the husband is permitted to divorce her, and this is not considered an injustice to her. The wife also has the right to seek a divorce if she is harmed by the inability to procreate. Divorce may hold good for both spouses, as Allah states: "But if they separate [by divorce], Allah will enrich each of them from His abundance." If the spouses sponsor an orphan and the woman breastfeeds him, she becomes his foster mother, and her husband becomes his foster father through suckling, thus establishing mahramiyyah (prohibition of marriage due to kinship). However, this does not alter the child's lineage, as adoption is forbidden, and the child must be attributed to his biological father, as Allah says: "Call them by [the names of] their fathers; it is more just in the sight of Allah."
